The Council of the Union for African Population Studies (UAPS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Prof. Ngianga-Bakwin Kandala as the new Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of African Population Studies. Prof. Kandala is a Distinguished Professor of Bio-statistics at the School of Public Health, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. He is also a Visiting Professor of Health Technology Assessment at Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick, UK.
He was, until recently, a Professor of Bio-statistics and Head of Applied Statistics Research group at Northumbria University, United Kingdom. Prior to this, he worked as Head of Health Economics and Evidence Synthesis Research Unit at the Luxembourg Institute of Health, Luxembourg and was Associate Professor in Health Technology Assessment, a joint appointment with the University of Oxford and University of Warwick.
Prof Kandala completed his PhD degree in Bio-statistics at Ludwig Maximilian at University of Munich, Germany and a postdoctoral training in demography at the University of Montreal, Canada. In his PhD work, Kandala pioneered a Bayesian spatial modelling of maternal and child health outcomes using large scale household data in Africa, an approach that is now widely used in spatial demography.
For the past 20 years, his main research interests are in capacity building in Bio-statistics in Africa and Bayesian statistical methods and their application to epidemiology and population health including maternal and child health in countries around the world using large scale household data. Prof. Kandala has published widely in high impact peer reviewed journals (Social Science and Medicine, Health and Place, BMJ, etc…) with over 200 publications in both the field of statistics and population health. He is a regular reviewer of several peer reviewed journals (Bulletin of the World Health Organization, Health and Place, Population Studies, Population, Space and Place, Lancet, BMJ, Nature etc…) and is a member of the Editorial board of the International Journal of Environment and Public Health and of the International Advisory Board of the Journal of Tropical Pediatrics.
His three recent books are titled (1) Advance Techniques for modelling Maternal and Child Health in Africa (2016), (2) Female Mutilation around the World: Analysis of Medical Aspects, Law and Practice (2018) both with Springer and (3) Statistical Modelling of Complex Correlated and Clustered Data Using Household Surveys in Africa (2019) with Nova Science Publishers. On his appointment, Prof Kandala said “It’s an exciting time for me and I would like to thank the UAPS Council for their commitment to the journal and am looking forward to continuing to work with them, especially in this new configuration of population studies that extends beyond disciplines.”
Prof. Kandala will spearhead the journal’s tradition of publishing high quality papers on pertinent population and development issues affecting the African continent. Furthermore, he will work with the Council to strengthen the impact and visibility of the journal and build an inclusive and diverse editorial team. His 4-year appointment started on 1st December 2021.
